Dirtbombs' drummer Ben Blackwell has created a map of Detroit of labels offering "vinyl releases throughout all eras". He also has a blog and participated in the SXSW panel "How to Make Money With Vinyl" (mp3) as an employee of Third Man Records.

Awesome record (no pun intended) of Detroit's huge influence on American music. It's too bad that its current scene may leave something to be desired.

Detroit's a pretty small town when it comes to any "scene," and a good half of any music talk in Detroit (or Michigan) is nostalgia, like about half of the car talk. So yeah, a lot of people get fed up, feel alienated and hate on any scene there. There are also a lot of folks who find a real welcoming community and enjoy it. A fair number of the haters make great music. A fair number of the people who find it really tight and connected make terrible music. I wouldn't necessarily take Wadsworth to be an accurate view of all of the music in Detroit, nor the music scene.

And The Dirtbombs are still, as far as I can tell, the best band (as well as best live band?) in America. All the more reason to love 'em now.
