Amy Sedaris crafts things
January 17, 2011 10:23 AM Subscribe
Amy Sedaris has a YouTube channel where she demonstrates how to craft objects from her new book Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People. So far she's made hot dogs on a rake, potato ships, a donut bird feeder, a Thanksgiving centerpiece, pompoms and a rabbit treat called Dynamite Stixx.
Ugh, she comes very close to Sarah Silverman in the "least funny" category.

You mean down at the bottom of that list, right?
That said, this is far from her best work.

I can't believe the number of Amazon readers who thought she was going to actually teach them something about crafts. It's touching, in a way.
But this isn't as funny as Regretsy. April Winchell is much funnier, I think.

Tears rolling down my face at the "hot dogs on a rake". The thing about Amy Sedaris is that she skirts so close to reality, you wonder "is she doing this on purpose?".
Folks, she is doing this on purpose. The camera shot on the guys crotch as she massages the hot dogs onto a rake...How in the hell she keeps a straight face I have no idea.

I love Amy Sedaris. I don't generally find her laugh-out-loud funny, but she always tickles me for some reason.
I DID laugh out loud at the glue bottles in the Potato Ships video. That happens to me every single time I need craft glue.

I bet that there are all kinds of actual crafts in there, just like "I Like You" has some great recipes and useful entertaining tips amongst all the crazy shit. In fact, come to my house and I'll make Amy's "blue balls" for you. Delicious little blue cheese nut-covered spheres of excellence.
Yes, no visitor ever leaves my house without blue balls. It's my guarantee.

If you can find the un-edited version, she quizzes Martha on her jailtime and it's fantastic, because it really sets Martha on edge.

There are indeed. It's that tension between "that's hilarious!" and "wait, is that supposed to be hilarious?" that I love.
In the new book, the list of common crafting accidents had me on the floor:
Sawdust fires
Pinecone lodged in throat
Decoupage fatigue blackout
Dried flower fungal infections
Seed sensitivity
Hanged from a yarn noose
Feather asphyxia
Vaginal bleeding

I think her absolute best work is her multiple visits to the David Letterman show. (Check Youtube, there's tons of them). Her mind is a miraculous thing and Dave is very good at getting it to run free in a sort of comedy jazz. He also seems bewitched by her, which adds to the fun.

This book is also awesome. I laughed. I cringed. I made some stuff. I laughed some more. I'm so excited that she's got a youtube channel. Seriously, it's like Christmas again. Also, I just like seeing Paul Dinello's face. I don't know why (OK, maybe it's because the image of him trying to be a real artist in Strangers with Candy cracks me up every single time I think of it.)

Oh honey, that was the era of aspics, peanut butter and tuna fish appetizers for cocktail parties, and people who drank Harvey's on purpose. The water supply had to have been spiked, it's the only thing that makes sense. Someone did a whole website of these sorts of recipes...and it was on mefi, but I'm having no luck finding it.

This is one of those moments when I feel so painfully not of this world. All these people I know think she's hilarious. People I didn't expect. It's one of those "I've entered a bizarre parallel universe feelings." I don't find her funny in the least. It's like I've suddenly become a German who's just gotten off the plane to attend a comedy show in London.
