OMGif! [Wired] "On Tuesday, Google announced via Google+ that Image Search now has an “Animated” filter. That means that if you’re only searching for animated magic, you need never be bothered with a still image again. Finally that search for Jennifer Lawrence GIFs from the Academy Awards just got a whole lot easier."

Now all we have to do is convince all of our favorite blogs to convert their RSS feeds to animated GIF format, and it'll be a passable Reader replacement.

Also, if you make an announcement on G+, does it actually count as an announcement?

Ok, so, say, if I search for a diesel engine oscillating piston does is bring up a nsfw page/icon by default? (just to be safe)

Animation - The Graphics Interchange Format is not intended as a platform for animation, even though it can be done in a limited way.
Implementing a rudimentary gif handler would be an interesting interview question.

This will become genuinely useful as soon as it works when supplied with a vague description of something I saw on Tumblr at 2 A.M.

tumblr is probably why GR got the boot -- I know google is full of impossibly smart people, but I don't think there's any way to monetize a constant stream of 5 MB "blingee breaking bad I am the one who tokes" gifs.

It's too bad browsers couldn't all decide on an animated PNG format (of which there are two, MNG, which is practically unsupported, and APNG, which is sparsely supported). 'Cuz GIFs are everyfreakingwhere these days and pretty much all look like crap due to their 256 color limit. I guess it doesn't really matter if you're just putting some lulzy image on your tumblr or internet comment thread, but stuff like cinemagraphs would be a lot nicer!

YES. I've been wondering why the crap this never was a thing that worked before

you've finally acknowledged the existence of tumblr, google.

So this is Google's way of telling Giphy, "Stop it, you're embarrassing yourself"?

Ok Metafilter, Google has made its move. Now can we have one day a year where people can post images? It'll be like a site-wide holiday.

What I want from Google Image Search is Reverse Safe Search. That is, an option that ONLY shows me the images Safe Search would block.

It's, uh, for a friend.

What I want from Google Image Search is Reverse Safe Search.

It should be possible to code up an app that does this in any of a number of environments.

1. Submit GIS query with safe search off, but do not load any images, even the thumbnails, on the returned page.

2. Submit GIS query with safe search on, ditto

3. Strike all results that are in search #2 from search #1 and display the thumbnails and links.

I was going to argue with your word choice here until I did a definition search for 'holiday':

"A day of festivity or recreation when no work is done."

Sounds about right after all.

@localroger

you can't turn "safe search" off in GIS at this point, what they are calling "safe search off" is actually moderate safe search

More important to me is the transparent background search filter they also added. Makes creating GIFs all that much easier.

The thing is that 256 colour limit is what makes the files small enough to post anywhere. If we had high quality animated PNGs, they would be such large files that you might just as well use an actual movie file format.

Its the same with lo-fi MP3's, sometimes convenience outweighs quality.
