I always love these beautiful libraries links. The Portuguese Reading Room in Rio is gorgeous.

José Vasconcelos Library in Mexico City looks like a Borg cube, or at least a Costco from hell. All of the others look delightful, but that one gives me the creeps.

Every library should have a bat colony.

Don't they shit and piss on the books?

They misspelled "Bodleian" in the very first caption. In an article about libraries!

I've lived in a cultural backwater for so long I've nearly forgotten what a real library looks like. :-(™

A bit surprised not to see the Abbey Library of Saint Gall listed. Worth a trip to Sankt Gallen, should you be nearby in Switzerland. Dates back to 939 and so beautifully furnished. It's really quite beautiful.

Growing up, my local library was the Huntington Beach Central Library, and it was a long time before I realized that most libraries weren't like that.

Is it weird that these make me a little swoony?

For my money, the Reading Room at the University of Washington's Suzzallo Library is more lovely and (FR) more temperate than any part of Seattle Central Library. (The prettiest parts of Seattle Central are also sometimes horribly hot.) plus, Suzzallo's stacks are way better and more usable than Seattle Central's.

Of course, the list (and the world) contains many examples of Gothic-cathedral-of-learning libraries that would blow Suzzallo out of the water, and relatively few of Seattle Central's late-PoMo-civic-folly type.

The bats sleep while the library is open. And then the stacks are covered with large clothes to prevent the guano from ruining the collections while the bats fly around at night.
