One nation under bareback

To mark Pride month, Pornhub collaborated with the LGBTQ+ culture site pride.com to round up data on what kinds of gay porn have amassed popularity with viewers, although they didn’t release exact information about their data collection or sample sizes. As we’ve noted before, yassified masturbation surveillance isn’t exactly the most ideal scenario, but it’s here and it’s certainly queer. from Vintage Cowboys and Cruising: What Gay Porn Viewers Are Searching For by State [Them] [CW: PornHub, Big Data]

Without looking at the data (because I'm at work), is it just the guys? The Them article seemed to imply that it was just gay male porn.

That's what it looks like.

In Texas, they're searching for VPNs.

It's just gay male porn, yes. I guess lesbian porn doesn't qualify as gay, but as straight porn, since it is mostly watched by and made for straight men?

The actual chart on the Pornhub page is interesting -- top search term for gay male porn in Japan was "Japanese" -- seems a little narcissistic. Australia loves "straight guys," but Russia, most of Europe, and most of South America are all about the "twinks." North America is "bareback" all the way.

But once you get into the state by state breakdown, things start to get spicy: Louisiana supports our troops with "real military," Idaho needs "bromance," and the Iowans like the simple pleasures of "old man solo."

Is this the most popular by state, or the most distinctively popular by state? Many of these "most popular food by state" or "favorite TV shows by state" maps are the latter, because "most popular" is usually the same, and they don't want to show 50 states of "pizza" or "NFL football." Whereas the "most popular food" map might, hypothetically, show crabs in Maryland only because 0.7 percent of Marylanders love crabs, and the national average is 0.1 percent.

As a Marylander, I assure you it's far more than 0.7 percent.

Honestly, I think it's this plus the delightful intersection of homophobia and misogyny, where gay men are a punchline and lesbians don't exist.

I had always understood gay to refer to men? LGBTQ treats gay and lesbian as different words. Maybe the distinction has gotten fuzzy in the last thirty years.

It's called frotting, North Dakota.

Looking at the world map, reports of Twink death are overrated.

I think it's more like many words where the male version can optionally include women. Like the way "hey guys" could be said to all men, all women, or a mix, whereas "hey ladies" generally only applies to a group of women. But if you said "let's play team trivia, guys vs ladies" the context would tell us you meant men vs women.

Merriam Webster says:
1a: of, relating to, or characterized by sexual or romantic attraction to people of one's same sex
—often used to refer to men only
