Once Again, Every Frame A Painting

Every Frame A Painting is a series of essays on the art of filmmaking by filmmakers Tony Zhou and Taylor Ramos, covering topics like how Vancouver never plays itself or how the MCU lacks a musical identity, among discussions of the techniques of notable filmmakers. Sadly, the channel has been defunct since 2017...until now.

With this announcement, the channel will not just present a limited series of new video essays, but a short film by Zhou, titled The Second.

I've been a per-video patreon supporter since The Marvel Symphonic Universe (yes, you can do the math). But I kept the membership on principle, even when they went idle.

I hope they reactivate the patreon account... if only to get loyaltybucks from those of us who have watched and rewatched those essays, and shared them with others, for years and years.

This is such exciting news, but I also hope this doesn't end up being a weird cash grab due to the reach they have with two million subscribers on YouTube even after being dormant for seven years.

The Tampopo Criterion blu-ray was one of the few items of physical media that moved with me to Northern Ireland, in part because it is (I believe) the only place their video essay on amateur vs professional is officially distributed (although someone has uploaded a copy to YouTube).

@mrzarquon, that Tampopo essay is fantastic, thank you for adding it to this conversation!

I have two videos of theirs I watch a lot: Jackie Chan, and Edgar Wright. Both illustrate what makes their particular styles of film making unique, and are also just so entertaining. I’m looking forward to watching this short!

Every Frame A Painting

Brings to mind the 2017 animated film Loving Vincent.

Each of the film's 65,000 frames is an oil painting on canvas, created using the same techniques as Van Gogh by a team of 125 artists drawn from around the globe.

This is great news.

I can't believe it's been 10 years since they did some of those early ones, like the Scorsese and the Spielberg ones.

One of my favorite things about the internet - and about life - is people loving something so much that they learn a ton about it, and then choosing to share that love with the rest of us.

Thank you so much for posting this, NoxAeternum!

Seeing this come up in my YouTube feed was a reminder why I never unsubscribe to "dead" channels. Maybe, just maybe, they'll be back.
