I took one look at the photo at the head of TFA and my first thought was "what does it eat to make itself toxic." I looked it up on Wikipedia and find that its genus (it has one sister species) are unique among toxic frogs in that they make their own toxin (an alkaloid, in this case) rather than sequestering toxins from their food.

Good luck, toxic tadpoles.

It’s been depressing hearing about corroboree frogs in recent years, as I can still remember hearing a chorus of them on a hike to Nursery Swamp in the ACT in the early 1990s. Sucks to be a witness to environmental decline. I hope this effort pays off.

Any Aussie who collected stamps in the 1970s/80s will remember them well - they featured in a gorgeous series of frog stamps at the time.
