Three young boys, the most famous dinosaur in history, and a prehistoric discovery that left them speechless. Two young brothers and their cousin made the discovery of a lifetime whilst hiking in North Dakota — a T-rex fossil poking out of the ground.

Oh man can you imagine being 10 (or 9 or 7) and finding a freakin T-Rex? I would have absolutely lost my entire shit. I know science blah blah blah but I really hope they let him bring a tooth to school.

Oh wow.. I'd have completely lost my dinosaur loving mind. Those kids are going to have to work extra hard to top that!

Eh... it was only a t-rex *fossil*?

Imagine going to college 10 years from now to study archaeology knowing you've already outdone everyone around you, and yourself for the next lifetime or two.

Such a great find for The Brothers. I was really hoping for a picture of the t-rex in situ!

I'm intensely curious what the process is when you find what looks like an interesting fossil on Bureau of Land Management territory. Who do you call? Who do you talk to? How do you mark the spot to find it again?

This is the coolest story — the paleontologist team had the kids come help dig it up! How great.

what the process is when you find what looks like an interesting fossil

Basically you can collect plant fossils but not animal fossils for personal collection. You can't sell or trade them. ( casual collection)
Anything else requires a permit.

here's a BLM link that goes into more detail

To mark it, I would just make a way point or write down the GPS coordinates.
I would avoid making any visible markings at all.

Here's a link from Utah
What should you do if you find a fossil? Can you keep it? Should you report it?

When I was that age I saw no reason this couldn't happen in my back yard in Pennsylvania. It was just a matter of digging in the right spot as far as I could see. I'm still mad.
