Have you ever heard the saying, "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast?" It's a mantra deeply ingrained in Navy SEALs operations. A counterintuitive concept that flips our usual understanding of speed and efficiency on its head. from Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Fast: Navy SEALs’ Efficiency Secret

Alison Fincher (07/24/2024), "31 Women Writing in Japanese." This includes a great, current roundup of translations available online. I read a few but not enough to pick a favorite that could anchor an FPP.

Starlink Satellites launch in groups, creating visible "sky trains" of white lights, sometimes mistaken for UFOs &c. If you see 'em, use the FindStarlink site to check if it's really aliens.

Sanrio, creator of Hello Kitty, doesn't have a monopoly on kawaii. Meet their competitor: San-X, creator of a whole menagerie of cute cuddlies. Including a character that has a red bean bun for a head. No, not that one. This one—Kogepan!

I really wanted to do a post on this during the Olympics but creating posts is a 'big computer' task and I only ever use 'small computers' now.

Anyway, Slate article and awesome old school website of the Oldest Living Olympians

Oh good, I was waiting for one of these!

Here's a lovely article about the Jersey Shore's "Chinatown by the Sea", Bradley Beach (NJ.com gift link)

jabah: San-X is great! Currently, my favorite character of theirs is Furoshiki, part of the Sumikko Gurashi menagerie (also, don't miss the description for Nisetsumuri on that same page!).

I just watched and listened to 17 yr. old Tina S play the 3rd movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata on electric guitar.

When I came back to myself some indeterminate time after it was done, I held my hands up in front of my face and thought 'well guys, we did what we could with what we had, I guess, but it’s probably just as well that we didn’t know about this until so late in the day.'

Lord of the Eggs - In LRB, Liam Shaw reviews the book The Last of Its Kind: The Search for the Great Auk and the Discovery of Extinction by Gísli Pálsson, translated by Anna Yates. This means he gets to tell the story of two English ornithologists in the 1800s who went to the Arctic to see the Great Auk but found it already extinct. Includes a train car full of eggs and an unplanned trip to a leper colony.

Well now that I have typed that out, I may as well just post it myself.
