Without rocks in her dress

with rocks in my dress
and smoke in my hair
i walked into a lake
to get some sleep down in there

This lyric from ‘Comfort Me’ by Sparklehorse (previously) is likely an allusion to Virginia Woolf whose family recently refused permission for a Barbie doll to be created in her image. According to this report in The Times (UK) (archived link) it looked like “a sort of Laura Ashley milk maid with a sweet little bun holding an accessory copy of Mrs Dalloway.”

Amongst the other requests for permission mentioned in the article was one for her suicide note to be projected on a large screen during a performance at the the Royal Opera House and another from ‘a drugs company that wished to use her name to help sell an anti-depressant designed to help people with bipolar disorder’, which seems more than a little ironic considering how she met her end.

The manner of Woolf’s death has grabbed the attention of a lot of people over the years and that fascination has found expression in many less-than-fully-sensitive ways, even from parties from whom one might ordinarily expect better.
