At the 2024 World Crokinole Championship Series, Justin Slater (fresh off his win in the World Crokinole Doubles Division) and Connor Reinman (the defending World Crokinole Champion) met in the semi-finals and managed a double perfect game. Confused? The Pudding has an interactive explainer.

The Pudding mentions 'the one-cheek rule,' but doesn't elaborate. Tracey Boards explains.

Crokinole previously and previouslier.

I'm here for the slow-mo instant replays.

Crokinole is enormous fun, even if it's mostly a rural Southern Ontario thing

I love that two world-class players going head to head can make the game look just incredibly boring.

As I was reading the article I was half convinced that this entire field of endeavor was going to end up being a generative AI hallucination, and I'm delighted to find that it is not.

Also props to The Pudding for inventing a meaningless word just for the fuck of it. You could do worse than "plamigerent".

One of our favorite things about visiting the family farm in the Adirondacks. Played like fiends.

If we ever nailed a 20 from the line, we all went nuts - I had no idea there was such a thing as a perfect game!

A lot of board game cons have Crokinole side-tournaments. It has the the SU&SD pear of approval and is sitting in the BoardGameGeek top 50, the only member of the top 100 invented before 1995!

A matchup not unlike Magic vs. Bird, or Swift vs. Eilish.

I stopped right there and started laughing. Takes a lotta damn gall to claim that a match in a sport that most people have never heard of nor would have any interest in, that has all the athleticism of a Sunday afternoon potato chip chowdown, and requires no talent nor business acumen, is remotely like a matchup between two of the greatest athletes to walk this Earth, or two of the most admired, talented and talked-about women this century has produced so far.

No talent?
I don't think you understand how competitive niche games can get.

I've played for over 30 years and I'm still quite bad!

Just imagine the precision with which these champions file their nails.

'the one-cheek rule,'

more honour'd in the breeches than the observance.

This is a great family game, strongly recommended if you have young kids.

Mind you, it's a much more interesting family experience when generations of play mean that grandma is a sniper.

This is like the best things about the Internet all rolled up into one. An incredibly dumb and simple game nobody's ever heard of, champion match between two totally unathletic guys, slo-mo, taking it seriously... chef's kiss.

Crokinole is the second best game in the world next to curling.

Also it’s apparently so easy that JustSayNoDawg will be at the championships next year - I look forward to seeing their performance! I’m sure I will learn something from it.

I fell down the YouTube crokinole hole a couple months ago - it’s surreal but after awhile you begin to recognize the names of the most frequent finalists.

My new board from a kickstarter should be arriving soon; will report back on quality.

This was a serious problem in curling so they introduced the free guard zone which meant that early stones couldn't be taken out and leaving cover for strategic plays. Made a huge difference in the watchability of curling.

When the winter Olympics comes around the only sport I actually pay any attention to is curling. So despite my derision of crokinole, I will probably be a fanatic in about six months.

What’s funny about curling is that Canadians take curling very seriously.
