I'm a big wuss...I don't like gore...so what am I going to see if I agree to the warnings on those links?

Trust me this is important. Your scars will heal.

It's a video of soldiers serving in Iraq messing about to the tune of an Electric Six song.

No gore.

Rather boring.

Shouldn't they be out killing sand people to get us our oil back?

Are both those likes supposed to go to the same video? If so, I don't understand this.

This strikes me as really sweet and optimistic and a little sad. These are just kids goofing around, and kids in bad circumstances with terrible responsibilities and in possibly in occasional mortal danger, still goofing around. To me it shows that even in the midst of a huge murderous cluskerfuck people can manage to find a moment to play. Seems like it could be the most mentally and spiritually healthy moments of their day.

Why have I never discharged a fire extinguisher into an occupied porta poty? Nice to see a little bit of humanity is out there somewhere.

The Narcotic of Dance and Laughter peewinkle. Oh, you were expecting, blood and gore with some Heroin mixed in. knaph - Sorry to disappoint your rather boring pampas (correct spelling) ass comment with a "fire at the... Taco Bell". But thanks for identifying the song, so maybe your life is not a total waste.
My eight year old son just watched it and commented; "Now that is just wrong." Yes son war is a terrible thing, now you know.

I know a couple of ex squaddies, and that video doesn't surprise me in the slightest! They've got a huge capacity for enjoying life one minute (like setting someone's bum on fire!) while dropping into a very serious professionalism the next when the situation demands it.

It may well be that it's stress relief, but I think it's as much the culture of the British armed forces to enjoy yourself in your downtime as best you can. Plus, when you're stuck on base with not much to do and nowhere to go, with a bunch of very fit physical men, a bit of horseplay and larking about is virtually inevitable.

And for those that haven't seen it, the squaddie version of 'way to Amarillo' is in the same vein.

Sorry to disappoint your rather boring pampas (correct spelling) ass comment...

Pam·pas (pmpz, pämpäs)
A vast plain of south-central South America extending for about 1,610 km (1,000 mi) from the lower Paraná River to south-central Argentina southwest of Buenos Aires.

Is that what you mean, MapGuy?

My eight year old son just watched it and commented; "Now that is just wrong." Yes son war is a terrible thing, now you know.

Your son hates the troops? What is he, a fucking communist?

I think the poster may have been on narcotics. Did you know that the soil of the pampas is very fertile and supports a thriving pastoral and farming economy?

Mapguy: The "No Gore" part of my post was unrelated to the "Rather boring" part of my post. "No Gore" pertained to gminks apprehension. "Rather boring" related to the fact that the video was.... "rather boring".

and "pompous" is probably the word you intended.

Metafilter: The Narcotic of Dance and Laughter
posted by jimfl at 8:49 AM on April 8, 2007

I was thinking the "pampas" spelling was intentional, and referred to the razor-edged, serrated leaves of pampas grass. In that regard it was clever, only I couldn't figure out how the ass part was serrated or cutting. That much I chalked up to my own inability to understand, and dropped it, rather than throw stones.
posted by avriette at 8:53 AM on April 8, 2007

Pampas: plain, grassland, lowland, prairie. In so much as your (knapah’s) comment was “Flat” as the geographic features of a plain, perhaps a bit of a bore in of it self not unlike a prairie, even a bit “lowland” in that this was intended as a feel good video of something unexpected. And here you go in the third comment setting the tone of popping the balloon of a perfectly giggly post of fun and mayhem. I know, I know linguistic snickery is not well received or even much appreciated here. And no, I wish I was clever enough, avriette, to get that connection. The “assed” part was just a tongue in cheek(bad choice of phrase perhaps) reference that you shat on the post, oh and that the video has that underlying very British buggerie feeling to it, toilet humor et. all.

But I really hated to trash your comment entirely, as you were sincerely kind enough to contribute by identifying the band from Detroit, and that after all is part of the fun of Metafilter, discovering new things in the threads. Didn’t mean to harsh the buzz, but thought you might get a laugh from the snark, knapah. Lastly, why would I call you pompous and point out that the spelling was correct when obviously it was not what was expected, again as a reflection of the post not being exactly what one envisions when presented with the description? As jimfl nicely pointed out Metafilter is after all: The Narcotic of Dance and Laughter. Metafilter is kind of the heady fun of a square dance as opposed to the strict form of the Waltz, is it not? Flame your partner, round and round... now dosee doe”

Call me what you will, but my son a commie? First, oh never mind that does not even deserve a reply, but I think he was referring to lighting your friends on fire. But then again that is part of the sport here, no? Anywho, enjoy the dance, laughs. “High Voltage! When we kiss…..”
