A Brimful Of Asha

Even if you only have a passing familiarity with Bollywood musicals, Asha Bhosle's voice will be familiar to you. As one of the most sought after playback singers in Bollywood, and an accomplished, versatile musician in her own right, she's reputed to have sung over 12.000 songs and may be the world's most recorded artist. She's certainly one of the most beloved.
The song 'brimful of asha' was a hit for the british group Cornershop, and the funny thing is that they didn't even know she was alive and well and recording.

Great post, f_p. I'm a longtime fan, love her voice.
Here's her MySpace page, with 4 of her tunes to listen to on her player there.

Very nice post, especially as a fan of some of the Hindi and Punjabi performers. Of course, I keep having Fifth Element flashbacks during some numbers...

Can we have a "displays ignorance of the world" flag please? Or is it just self-evident?

Cornershop's album When I was born for the 7th time was/is the pivotal music moment in my life. That marked the moment where I realized the stuff I was listening to was mostly crap. It also kindled my interest in the stuff they were sampling or covering; wicked disco, world beats, hip-hop, The Beatles, etc. Brimful of Asha was playing on the radio, and i taped it onto a cassette, listened to it so many times the tape broke, so i bought my first CD and CD player.
In my opinion, they were riding the first part of the wave of music that was reusing disco beats in different contexts, and some of their stuff reminds of M.I.A. (I actually thought M.I.A. was just a cornershop song I hadn't heard yet when I first heard her.)
Thank you Tjinder Singh and Cornershop, you changed my life.
