About fifteen years ago now, my brother visited me in Japan during my first year living here. He commented to me that he’d always thought anime backgrounds and environments were so fascinatingly creative, and then he visited and learned that that’s just kind of how normal places look.

I love the floppy-diskette one. (They're not all floppies. I saw some Sony Mini-Discs in there.)

The backgrounds are remarkable. Scrolling through I was almost relieved every time I came to one I recognised because I didn't have to add it to my backlog out of the sheer curiosity evoked.

DoctorFedora: that’s just kind of how normal places look.

I got back into watching anime mostly because the backgrounds reminded me of Japan. The fact that they are drawn/painted somehow makes them more evocative than seeing the same environments in a live action drama.

I also love this blog which documents people who hunt for the real locations.
