It is hard enough to take "centrist voters" seriously when Republicans say "You were better off when we were last in charge" and they act like this is debatable when any sober consideration would indicate that is not true. But this time, the GOP is saying that and the last time they were in charge, the economy was destroyed, none of us could leave our homes, and everyone's grandma was dying a horrible death. So how am I supposed to treat those people like they're not total dipshits this time?

And, Cosmos-willing, when he loses again, he will never say anything of consequence again because nothing he says after that will have any affect on the lives outside of anyone dumb enough to be in his orbit by their own greedy volition.

Recall that the Harris campaign was asking for unmuted mics to allow Trump to go off the rails and show the country how unhinged he is. Many thought that the muted mics in the Biden debate allowed all of the focus to remain on Biden's cognitive decline rather than let Trump bully the man.

My impression is that ABC giving him more speaking time was both the moderators silently complying with the Harris campaign request and Harris wanting to turn the tables on Trump.

A quick thing about "I saw it on television. "

This is part of how misinformation works.

Step 1: invent a lie
Step 2: repeat the lie a bunch in public
Step 3: repeat it enough that somebody runs something about the lie on TV
Step 4: use the fact that it was on TV as evidence that it must be true

"Donald Trump had a really, really bad debate." - New Yorker.

Here's an extract:

Harris’s bet was that Trump would say a lot of crazy and unhinged stuff if she got him going. It was a safe bet. I’ve watched every Presidential debate for the past two decades, and I can’t think of anything that ranks higher in pure stupidity than Trump ranting and raving to a national audience about immigrants supposedly eating people’s cats and dogs. His line about how the Vice-President “wants to do transgender operations on illegal aliens that are in prison” was pretty memorable, too. What the hell was he talking about? No one knows, which was, of course, exactly Harris’s point. Trump was so unprepared for the debate that even he himself did not seem to know what he was saying at times. Asked to describe his proposal for jettisoning Obamacare and replacing it with something better, Trump tried to blame Democrats for the fact he didn’t have one yet. Rather, he said, “I have concepts of a plan.” Yeah, right.

I agree, it was obvious that the moderators (or whoever was in charge of turning the microphones back on) were yielding to Trump's demands for a rebuttal to everything Harris said, so the general perception that she won is on top of the moderators giving Trump an unearned advantage. (Though like I said, given that he dug himself deeper the more he ran his yap, I am sure her prep team gamed that scenario out already.)

"giving Trump an unearned advantage" = "giving him enough rope to hang himself with"

I mean, the mods knew what he'd do if they let him go. And they also knew if they cut him off they'd be accused of silencing/censoring him by the right. So, they just let the man rant, and factchecked as he went. In the end, the debate is intended to give americans a better idea of who the candidates are. I'd say this debate succeeded brilliantly.

Harris claimed that Trump “wants to be a dictator on Day 1,” but the former president has said that he was joking when he said he would be a dictator for one day.
The moderators fact-checked him on his baby-murder bullshit, but didn't correct his misidentifying the governor of Virginia as the governor of West Virginia.

Republicans dismayed by Trump’s ‘bad’ and ‘unprepared’ debate performance: GOP lawmakers and analysts virtually unanimous that Trump was second best to Harris in first presidential debate [The Guardian]
“I’m just sad,” one House Republican told the Hill. “She knew exactly where to cut to get under his skin. Just overall disappointing that he isn’t being more composed like the first debate. The road just got very narrow. This is not good.”
...
“The headline for the next few days will be how he lost this thing,” one GOP representative told Politico. “I expect him to do something drastic, whether it’s a campaign shake-up or some other wild antic, by the end of the week to change the upcoming news cycle.”

It is definitively shown that the more Trump talks in one block, the less people like him. Letting him ramble incoherently is exactly what the Harris/Walz campaign wanted since they specifically wanted the mics left on. The handlers of Trump demanded they stay off.

Trump could not help himself and ruined what his handlers had arranged.

It’s baffling to me that people think “more time” helped THIS GUY. I can bring up any “rebuttal” from last night and after hearing it, the impression won’t be better. She knew the specific needle jabs to deliver that would make him rant for 2-3 minutes at a time.
posted by OnTheLastCastle at 10:09 AM on September 11 [9 favorites]

people seem to view the moderators' inability to rein Trump in as a plus (for Harris) based on an assumption that most people think an aging white male aggressively over-talking others looks bad. That again, a white male saying often incoherent things and outright lies, with confidence, and despite two people in the room telling him to move on (and not cutting his mic), looks bad for Team Trump and works in Harris's favour.

a percentage of voters saw something else, they saw something that made sense to them, and it makes sense that when Trump has things to say he gets to say it. It makes sense that Harris shuts up when she is told to shut up.

we can hope that there are not enough of those people to put Trump back in office. but just the fact of how close this is should give anyone pause before they make confident statements about who won anything.

I think it's safe to say that Harris won the debate. But that's meaningless if she doesn't also win the election, which is far from a done deal. In fact, if it's an even remotely close result, the aftermath is going to be ugly indeed.

+1 for "debate posts on the blue, please." That's where politics belongs.

Additionally, one of the things I like about FanFare is that posts there remain open in perpetuity; you can enjoy something years later, come find its FanFare thread, add your comment. The debates are by their very nature of-the-moment and ephemeral; they really don't need perpetual posts.

(This argument is slightly muddied by the presence of other Special Event posts on FanFare but still.)
